African Asylum Seekers & Refugees in Israel
A Conversation with Oded Oron & Yikealo Beyene
As a result of governmental policies that have neglected to address the issue of irregular migration between 2005 and 2012, tens of thousands of asylum seekers entered Israel from its southern border. Of the approximately 38,000 African asylum seekers in Israel, approximately 8,000 are from Sudan (mostly from the Darfur region), approximately 27,000 from Eritrea, and approximately 3,000 from other countries. While it is certainly possible that there are some Sudanese and Eritrean asylum seekers in Israel who do not meet the legal definition of a refugee, unfortunately, in Israel, most applications for asylum remain unanswered, and the applicants therefore remain “asylum seekers”. Israel recently announced it is planing to begin a campaign of mass deportation of asylum seekers to Rwanda and Uganda. The purpose of our talk is to educate about his issue and remind Jews who are willing to listen, that Israel has a moral and legal obligation to refugees – as a member of the community of nations, and a signatory of the International Convention on the Status of Refugees, and as a state built by refugees on the basis of Jewish values.
