Selichot Program and Service
Saturday evening, September 21 at 8:30pm

8:30pm: Havdallah
8:40pm: Project Zug Kickoff and Learning- “Tzedakah: the Jewish Approach to Giving”
10:00pm: Dessert
10:15pm: Klezmer Selichot, led by Carl Sayres

“But teshuvah (repentance), tefillah (prayer), and tzedakah (giving) avert the severity of the decree.”

We chant these words during the climax of the musaf service on Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur.  And indeed, on those days, we occupy ourselves with the work of repentance and prayer.  But we rarely explore tzedakah connected to the High Holidays (perhaps because of the restriction on handling money on those days).  As we prepare for the High Holidays with selichot, join us in taking the opportunity to learn together about the mitzvah of tzedakah and the role that it can play in changing our lives and changing our world.

We will learn texts from “Tzedakah: the Jewish Approach to Giving,” a Project Zug curriculum by Rabbi Elie Kaunfer, President and CEO of the Hadar Institute.  This pre-selichot program will also be the official kickoff of our partnership with Project Zug, and a great opportunity to learn more about how the project works, to find a chavruta (a learning partner), and to explore the course offerings that the CBS community has access to for the coming year.

More about Klezmer Selichot:

The Selichot service starts the process of opening our hearts for the Yamim Noraim, awakening our thoughts of forgiveness and teshuvah (repentance), and preparing us for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Music is such a powerful tool for chiseling away at the walls that keep us from teshuvah. This year’s Selichot service will be filled with music, both new and old, accompanied by Klezmer musicians. Please join us for a very special Selichot service filled with singing and the sounds of Klezmer music.
