Living Nonviolence: Becoming a Combatant for Peace

January 5, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 10:00 am

Beth Shalom is co-sponsoring the Powered by Courage series, hosted by Encounter, which features Palestinian civil society leaders in conversation with Jewish community leaders. Register here for Zoom link. We are also organizing with Kavana Cooperative and our member Julie Kohl (who participated in an Encounters trip) some small Seattle follow up discussions to this series.  Please let Rabbi Borodin know if you would like to be part of those conversations.

Osama Elewat, Board Member, Combatants for Peace

Osama was born in Jerusalem but moved with his family at age 10 to Jericho. After encountering the Israeli army several times on his way to school, he decided to join the violent resistance. He began throwing stones, creating Molotov cocktails, and tagging walls with graffiti. At age 14, he was arrested for hanging a Palestinian flag. After his release, he continued his studies, earned a degree in electrical engineering, and joined the Palestinian police force. However, after being sent to guard a settlement, he gave up his position on the police force and continued to resist violently. After seeing several of his friends killed, he decided to give up violent resistance and now volunteers with and shares his story through Combatants for Peace.
