Tzedek, Beth Shalom’s anti-racist group, brings you a Zoom book discussion series about Caste The Origins of our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. Book discussion facilitator and CBS member Annette Peizer has been leading literature discussions for over thirty years as a past college English instructor and is currently a community center creative writing instructor. This new book by The Pulitzer Prize and National Humanities Medal winning author explores how a hidden caste system in the United States has shaped our culture even beyond what we commonly refer to as racism. Wilkerson clarifies the caste system as the underlying “bones” of a system, while racism is the “skin.” Examining the caste systems of India and Nazi Germany, and how the Nazis studied the racial inequalities in the United States to help them dehumanize Jews, Wilkerson draws on deeply researched narrative and riveting stories about real people.

The group will read roughly 77 pages/session, including before the first session. RSVP below for the Zoom link and reading reminders.
